    Did You Know?

Surgical Treatment Can Improve Mobility for Children with Cerebral Palsy

Many people are unaware that advanced surgical treatments like SEMLARASS can dramatically improve mobility and independence for children with cerebral palsy. Traditional approaches often focus solely on physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and other non-surgical management strategies. These approaches, while beneficial, often overlook the underlying structural issues that can be effectively treated with innovative surgical solutions.

    SEMLARASS: A Comprehensive Approach

Developed by Dr. Deepak Sharan, SEMLARASS (Single event multilevel lever arm restoration & anti-spasticity surgery) is an innovative surgical approach specifically designed for cerebral palsy treatment in children.

This cerebral palsy surgery stands out by offering

    Comprehensive Treatment

Multiple corrective surgeries are combined into a single event to address all affected areas.

    Minimally Invasive Procedure

Advanced techniques reduce recovery time and improve outcomes.

    Customized Care

The surgery is followed by an intensive, protocol-based rehabilitation program, supervised by Dr. Deepak Sharan.

    Benefits of SEMLARASS

    Preserved Muscle Function

SEMLARASS specifically targets only the necessary muscles, ensuring that vital antigravity and monoarticular muscles retain their functionality.

    Enhanced Sensory Retention

We ensure there is no loss of sensation or the ability to perceive the position and movement of the body (stereognosis), crucial for daily activities.

    Stability and Mobility

By addressing multiple joints simultaneously and correcting lever arm dysfunction, SEMLARASS significantly enhances the patient’s stability and range of motion, which reduces the risk of future dislocations and deformities.

    Safe and Effective

With a track record of success and minimal long-term complications, this approach provides a reliable path to improved mobility without significant recurrence rates in patients who follow post-operative guidelines.

    Post-Operative Rehabilitation

Recovery and rehabilitation are as crucial as the surgery itself. At Recoup Health, we have developed a phased, comprehensive rehabilitation program tailored to the unique needs of each patient following SEMLARASS. Our program includes

    0-2 Weeks

    Initial Recovery

Focus on reducing pain and stiffness while enhancing the range of motion.

    2-4 Weeks

    Weight Bearing

Gradual increase in weight bearing activities to build muscle strength, improve mobility, and ensure proper postural alignment.

    4-6 Weeks

    Ambulatory Enhancement

Concentrated efforts on improving gait patterns, coordination, and balance.

    6-24 Weeks

    Long-Term Functional Development

Aimed at boosting both gross and fine motor skills and integrating the patient back into community activities.

    Why Is Early Identification Important?

Early identification in infants with cerebral palsy is critical as it allows for the most effective use of interventions that can prevent severe complications such as hip dislocations and other deformities that significantly impair mobility. However, our treatment approach at Recoup Health is designed to benefit individuals at any age. Even older children and adults can see substantial improvements in mobility and quality of life with our specialized interventions. This inclusive approach ensures that all individuals with cerebral palsy have access to the treatments they need to enhance their well-being and achieve greater independence.

    Testimonials

    Is cerebral palsy preventable?

While cerebral palsy is not currently preventable, it is important for parents and caregivers to monitor their child’s developmental milestones closely. Babies with cerebral palsy may experience delays in reaching certain milestones that could initially go unnoticed. With early detection and intervention, we can help children with cerebral palsy reach their fullest potential and enhance their quality of life.

At what age can children undergo SEMLARASS?

The ideal window for undergoing SEMLARASS is between the ages of 4 and 8 years old, particularly for children with spastic diplegia or other forms of spastic cerebral palsy. During this time, children have often developed a mature gait pattern and are better able to cooperate with the intensive post-operative rehabilitation program. Depending on the severity of their condition however, we may recommend proceeding with the surgery regardless of age to preserve their ability to walk.

What steps are involved in the SEMLARASS procedure?

SEMLARASS is a comprehensive approach that combines multiple corrective procedures in a single event. It utilizes minimally invasive techniques to address deformities, restore proper muscle function, and reduce spasticity. After the surgery, we provide intensive, protocol-based rehabilitation under the guidance of our expert interdisciplinary team.

How long does recovery take after SEMLARASS?

Recovery is a gradual journey, with functional improvements continuing for up to 2 years or more after the surgery. During this time, your child will participate in an intensive rehabilitation program focused on strengthening muscles, improving mobility, and developing new skills. Our team will be there to support you every step of the way.
