What are the main symptoms of GERD?

The most common symptoms of GERD include persistent heartburn, acid reflux, difficulty swallowing, respiratory issues (asthma, pneumonia), chronic cough, hoarseness, chest pain and migraines. Some people may also experience regurgitation of food or a sour taste in the mouth with long-term symptoms including dental erosion.

How does GERD develop and what causes it?

Conventional medicine often links GERD to an infection by Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) and a weakening of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), which prevents stomach contents from re-entering the esophagus. H. pylori is a common bacterial infection that can adversely affect the stomach lining and increase acidity, contributing to the symptoms of GERD. However, modern studies have shown that lifestyle factors such as diet, stress, obesity, hormonal imbalances, lack of sleep, and insufficient physical activity also play significant roles in the development of GERD. These factors can exacerbate the weakening of the LES, leading to more frequent and severe symptoms.

How is GERD diagnosed and treated?

GERD is typically diagnosed through clinical evaluations that include symptom assessment and medical history analysis. However, complications from GERD are often identified using diagnostic tests such as endoscopy. Our approach at Recoup Health involves addressing the underlying causes of GERD through dietary changes, medication, and advanced therapies like ozone treatment, IV nutrition and colon cleansing. The goal is to provide lasting relief and prevent long-term complications.

Can GERD be prevented or managed long-term?

Yes, with the right lifestyle modifications and personalized treatment plan, many people are able to effectively manage their GERD symptoms and prevent complications. Our integrative program at Recoup Health empowers patients to make sustainable changes to their diet, stress levels, and overall gut health to address the root causes.
